Best Time to Enrol in a Dubai School

Enrolling your child in a school is a significant decision, especially in a fast-growing city like Dubai, where schools follow diverse curricula and admission cycles. Understanding the best time to enrol can help ensure a smooth transition and increase your chances of securing a spot in your preferred institution. Here’s what parents need to know:

  1. Understand the Admission Cycle
Dubai schools typically follow an academic year that starts in either September (for British, IB, and American curricula) or April (for Indian and some other Asian curricula). It’s essential to know which cycle your chosen school adheres to so you can plan accordingly. Most schools begin accepting applications 6–12 months before the start of the academic year.

  1. Early Applications Are Key
The demand for quality schools in Dubai is high, and popular institutions often have limited spots. To improve your chances, aim to submit your application as soon as the admission window opens. For September start dates, applications generally open between October and January of the preceding year. For April start dates, applications may open as early as August.

  1. Consider Mid-Year Enrolment
If you’re relocating to Dubai mid-year, some schools may accept new students depending on seat availability. However, be prepared for a more limited selection and ensure your child’s previous school records are ready for submission.

  1. Attend Open Days and Tours
Most Dubai schools host open days or tours to help parents learn more about their facilities and programmes. These events usually occur a few months before the admission cycle begins, making them an excellent opportunity to shortlist schools before applications open. At GIS, we have regular webinars which provides an overview of our school and the IB curriculum which may be useful, particularly if you’re currently overseas. We also offer SLT-led tours, providing an opportunity to engage with our senior leadership team. Additionally, applicants may request a virtual meeting with the admissions team for personalised guidance.

  1. KHDA Approval and Documentation
The Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) governs school admissions in Dubai. Ensure that all required documentation, including transfer certificates and previous school reports, meets KHDA requirements. Starting the paperwork early can save time and avoid last-minute delays.

Final Thoughts

The best time to enrol in a Dubai school depends on your chosen curriculum and the school’s specific admission timelines. Early planning, research, and timely applications are crucial to securing a place at a top school. By staying informed and organised, you can give your child the best start in their educational journey in Dubai.
