Welcome to Middle Years Programme at GIS

Bridging the learning of PYP and the IBDP/CP with creativity, innovation, and real-world inquiry.

About
Middle Years Programme

The curriculum is developed for students between the ages of 11 and 16 years old. Our inquiry-based approach to learning and teaching ensures that students are at the center of the education model, as they are in all IB programmes, and that the learning is in line with their own personal, social, and emotional development and wellbeing. For this reason, as well as to ensure the relevance of the learning, the programme is concept-driven and grounded in the real world through global context explorations. Core aspects of the programme work together to ensure that our students are engaged with their learning and aspire to become lifelong learners.

Meet our
MYP Coordinator

Sandy Trull has spent the past eight years as a passionate Middle Years Coordinator and fifteen years as a dedicated IB educator in China and her home, South Africa. She is committed to bringing the IB mission to life, nurturing inquiring, knowledgeable, and compassionate young minds who strive for a better, more peaceful world built on intercultural understanding and respect. GEMS International School is an inspiring place to achieve these goals. With our diverse community of students and staff, we are united by shared values of respect, trust, and ambition—the pillars of our school. We believe wellbeing is the cornerstone of meaningful experiences, strong relationships, and academic success. Our top priority is fostering a supportive, joyful environment where students thrive. Through student-centred learning, collaboration, and inquiry, we nurture a deeper understanding of the world while fostering personal, social, and academic growth.

Inquiry Based

Inquiry-based learning in the MYP (Middle Years Programme) is a student-centered approach that fosters curiosity and active exploration of real-world concepts. It encourages students to ask meaningful questions, investigate ideas, and construct their own understanding. Through interdisciplinary learning, students connect subjects, explore global contexts, and apply critical thinking to solve complex problems. Teachers act as facilitators, guiding students to take ownership of their learning, collaborate with peers, and reflect on their progress. This approach develops essential skills like research, communication, and self-management while inspiring lifelong learning. Inquiry in the MYP empowers students to become independent, reflective, and globally minded thinkers.

Concept Driven

The MYP (Middle Years Programme) is a concept-driven curriculum that emphasises deep understanding over rote memorisation. It is built around key and related concepts, which provide a framework for exploring big ideas that transcend subjects and connect learning to real-world contexts. This approach encourages students to think critically, make meaningful connections between disciplines, and apply their knowledge to new situations. By focusing on concepts such as change, relationships, and systems, the MYP fosters inquiry, reflection, and analysis, helping students develop transferable skills and a global perspective. Concept-driven learning empowers students to see the bigger picture, encouraging them to engage with complex issues and become adaptable, lifelong learners.

Contextualised

The MYP connects learning to the real world through global context explorations. These include identities and relationships, orientation in space and time, personal and cultural expression, scientific and technical innovation, globalisation and sustainability, and fairness and development. These contexts provide authentic frameworks, linking studies to societal, cultural, and environmental issues. By exploring concepts through global lenses, students develop critical thinking, empathy, and an understanding of the world’s interconnectedness. This approach empowers them to apply knowledge, solve real-world challenges, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

High Performance Learning

High-performance learning at GEMS International School (GIS) is built on the belief that every student can achieve exceptional success. We nurture a growth mindset, focusing on cognitive skills, resilience, and lifelong learning. Through inquiry-based, personalised approaches, students think critically, collaborate, and solve real-world problems.

GIS teachers guide students in setting ambitious goals and reflecting on progress. Our inclusive environment empowers students to excel academically and personally. By integrating innovative teaching with a focus on global citizenship, GIS fosters confident, creative, and compassionate learners, ready to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Trips and Visits

Students at GEMS International School (GIS) take part in diverse trips that enrich learning and personal growth. Local excursions to cultural landmarks, museums, and science centres connect classroom learning to real-world contexts, while service-learning trips foster empathy and responsibility.

For global exposure, GIS offers international trips through the Week Without Walls programme, Model United Nations, cultural exchanges, and eco-adventures. These experiences develop global awareness, collaboration, and leadership, focusing on Service as Action and the Sustainable Development Goals. Every trip supports students’ academic, personal, and social growth, shaping them into well-rounded, globally minded individuals.

frequently asked
questions

How does assessment in the MYP work?

Assessment in the MYP (Middle Years Programme) is criterion-related, focusing on measuring student performance against predefined standards rather than comparing them to peers. Each subject group has specific criteria, usually four, designed to evaluate key skills and knowledge areas.

Students are assessed using a variety of tasks, such as projects, presentations, essays, exams, and creative works, allowing them to demonstrate their understanding and skills in diverse ways. Teachers provide detailed feedback based on the criteria to guide improvement and encourage reflection.

MYP assessment promotes ongoing learning by focusing on formative assessments, which support skill development, and summative assessments, which evaluate students’ achievement at the end of a learning cycle. This approach fosters critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving, preparing students for success in the IB Diploma Programme, Career-related Programme and beyond.

What is the e-Assessment? Do you do the e-Assessment

E-Assessment in the MYP is a digital-based assessment method that allows students to demonstrate their learning through online platforms. It includes a range of tasks, such as multiple-choice questions, short-answer responses, and written tasks, which are assessed electronically. e-Assessment provides a more efficient way of evaluating students’ progress while offering flexibility in the types of assessments that can be administered.

Through e-Assessment, students can take tests that are designed to measure their understanding and skills in a consistent and secure online environment. This form of assessment supports the MYP’s focus on preparing students for a rapidly evolving world, ensuring they are equipped with both academic knowledge and digital literacy skills.

GIS is planning to implement the e-Assessment.

What is the Personal Project?

What is the Personal Project?

The Personal Project in the MYP is a significant, independent project that allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth. It encourages students to demonstrate their learning and skills through a creative process, where they plan, research, create, and present their work. The project typically culminates in a final product, which could be anything from a written report to a piece of artwork or a prototype.

Throughout the process, students reflect on their learning, set goals, and evaluate their progress. The Personal Project helps develop key skills such as project management, critical thinking, creativity, and communication, while also allowing students to connect their studies to real-world issues or personal passions. It is a key component of the MYP, fostering independence and preparing students for future academic and career challenges.

What do you think about homework?

Homework helps MYP students to develop independence, responsibility, and strong organisational skills that prepare them for continued learning beyond the MYP.

Homework focuses on learning beyond the classroom and consolidation of skills including skills in numeracy and literacy. Homework is the responsibility of the student and to be completed with independence. Parents are encouraged to support a routine at home to set each child up for success.

What I can see is that they are not worried about achieving a number on a test. It’s more about if I did not get the answer, how can I work on that area.

You are teaching our children how to be open-minded, and how to develop skills that will be necessary in the future.

Szymon and Sylwia

The IB Curriculum helps my children to be more flexible in changing times. They learn how to find information, to analyse, to research, preparing them for the future.

Ms. Svetlana

Parent of Grade 4 & 7

It was no doubt from my side that they were going to an IB school I strongly believe that their independence and their critical thinking skills are preparing them really well.

Ms. Janne

Parent of Grade 2, 8, 10 & Grade 12

We picked IB because we think that the level of education fits well with that in the Netherlands, so when we go back, it’s a smooth transition.
