Innovator, leader, changemaker
Since her arrival at GEMS International School, Tanvi’s enthusiasm, willingness to embrace new challenges and ability to contribute to the success of a team has seen her blossom as a leader and changemaker. Taking advantage of the activities and opportunities that the school provides, she has been a particularly notable achiever as part of several design projects, as well as the Model United Nations program.

Designing solutions to global challenges
When she was a Grade 9 student, Tanvi was selected by her design teacher to participate as part of a team in a competition that was an initiative of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI). Her team partnered with Adidas to look for a solution to the huge problem of plastic pollution in our oceans. The team took on the name ‘STAR’ and created a whale out of plastic that would raise awareness about the issue, while also recycling waste. Their submission made it to the semi-finals and led to the team participating in several more similar competitions.

That same year, another teacher approached STAR about being his team for CISR, as the students initially picked for the project were unable to make it. “Although we were notified only a week before the competition, for which other teams had been preparing for two months, we created a solar-powered dustbin, which won us the runners-up prize,” an obviously proud Tanvi tells us.
The following year, as part of a new group of students, Tanvi took part in the Aluminium Competition, in which her team was declared one of the top five teams in the UAE from a field of 500. One of the only international groups, the team was invited to attend workshops, with the final competition held at the expo in Abu Dhabi. The highlight of the year was the Drone Competition, for which Tanvi’s team became the only team from the Middle East to be selected for the year, as well as the first from the region to have reached the finals in the competition’s history.
A young leader at the Model United Nations
“I am extremely proud of how far our school has come in terms of MUN, and I’m grateful for the support and encouragement I have received from my teachers,”

When she first arrived at GEMS International School, Tanvi was one of two students in the Model United Nations Club. After attending the Harvard MUN, she approached the school the following year with a plan for creating the institution’s own MUN program within the school, which received the enthusiastic support of the GIS faculty. This led to the MUN Club convening every Wednesday after school and Tanvi leading three delegations to conferences in the UAE that year.
In November 2019, GEMS International School hosted its first MUN conference, with attendees from over 17 UAE schools. Tanvi was the Secretary General for the conference, as well as the MUN Advisor for GIS.
